Getting Started

You need a career path, which universities refer to as a major. Before you can make a decision on something as huge as "WHAT YOU WANT TO DO FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE," you need to take a few small steps. Here are a few things you can do to get started:

  • Assess your academic strengths

    • Understanding your gifts is the most important knowledge when choosing a major. For example, if you do not enjoy Math, do not choose accounting as a major. If you do not excel in fact-based courses, do not choose a History degree. THINKING about who you are and what you do well will save you a lot of time and energy while making this decision. To assist in this effort, you can complete the FOCUS 2 assessment, which provides information about your talents.

  • Look at a LIST OF UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

    • Print out the list of undergraduate majors and cross off the ones you know you’re not interested in. Once you have narrowed your options from 95 to 10, look at the degree map for each option and research the necessary classes needed to complete the degree.
